Cancer Care Grants awarded to non-profits in Lowndes, Grady counties
Denise Ballard,Southwest Georgia Cancer Coalition VP of Cancer Prevention and Control, presents Martha Griffis and John Sparks, representing the Partnership Cancer Fund, with a check for $3,000 to assist local cancer patients.
Hundreds of southwest Georgia cancer patients will receive help with needs associated with their treatment and survivorship thanks to $6,000 in grant money awarded this month by the Southwest Georgia Cancer Coalition.
Partnership Cancer Fund of Lowndes County and Grady County Help Agencies, Inc. each received Cancer Care Grants from Cancer Coalition funds donated specifically for the grants. To date, over $119,000 has been awarded to local community non-profits since the grants were established in 2006. Funds have been used for nutritional supplements, medication, transportation, wigs, and other needs often felt by cancer patients throughout the Cancer Coalition’s 33-county region.
“We are so pleased to be able to provide funding to local organizations that assist cancer patients in their communities,” said Diane Fletcher, CEO of the Southwest Georgia Cancer Coalition. Non-profit community-based health or advocacy organizations that directly support cancer patients were encouraged to apply for the grants.
With an award of $3,000, Partnership Cancer Fund will work to ease the financial burden for cancer patients by providing direct patient assistance through medical equipment, medication or transportation. Part of the Lowndes County Partnership for Health, Partnership Cancer Fund gave over $35,000 in assistance to 147 cancer patients and their families last year.
Grady County Health Agencies Inc. was established in 1984 as a collaborative effort among churches and service organizations who sought to provide help for needy citizens. They currently serve an average of 350 clients per month and will use their $3,000 award to assist cancer patients with utilities, rent and medical needs.
